History
The Pragmatics and Language Learning conference was originated by the Division of English as an International Language at the Intensive English Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne, USA.
The general theme of the conference is on the interaction of pragmatics (including discourse analysis and conversation analysis) with the teaching and/or learning of a second or foreign language in either formal or informal surroundings.
The conference and the monograph series serve as a forum for research into the pragmatics of the language learning process and to encourage interaction between scholars involved in pragmatics and in language pedagogy.
The 17th PLL was hosted by the University of Hawai'i in 2007, with 279 researchers and presenters taking part.
Although the conference has always attracted participants from all over the world, PLL18 in Kobe, Japan, will be the first time the conference has been held outside the US, making it a truly international event.
PLL19 will be held in 2012 at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) (Coordinator Julie Belz).
